For some outside perspectives on just how realistic reaching the top of the credit-score scale is and how fruitful of an accomplishment that would be, we posed the following questions to a panel of personal finance experts. Meet them and see what they had to say, below.

Start of the day was callings patients and reviewing their medical claims for collection or to resolve any issues. Management was okay. My co-workers were great. The hardest part of my job was lack of respect from Management.
Lenders need not reveal their credit score head, nor need they reveal the minimum credit score required for the applicant to be accepted. Owing only to this lack of information to the consumer, it is impossible for him or her to know in advance if they will pass a lender’s credit scoring requirements. However, it may still be useful for consumers to gauge their chances of being successful with their credit or loan applications by checking their credit score prior to applying.
You want the percentage of your debt-to-income ratio to be lower. Otherwise a lender may look at a high number and immediately think you will be unable to successfully make any more monthly payments. You may then be considered a higher credit risk for them.
We are currently seeing a rise in credit card debt and interest rates as we progress through 2018 so it is important to focus on these credit scores to better understand what we can do to help improve our average credit score.
Yes, you can, but not by using the standard credit scoring models. The most popular credit scores, including VantageScore 3.0 and 4.0 and FICO 8 and 9, all use the standard range of 300 to 850, so a credit score of 900 isn’t possible with those models. But some older models, as well as some alternative scores, do go up to 900 (or even beyond). You can learn more about credit scores with unusually high ranges here: https://wallethub.com/edu/900-credit-score/39567/. That being said, a credit score of 900 is not very relevant. You probably won’t encounter these ratings often, so you should rather pay attention to where you stand on the standard credit score range. You can figure that out easily by checking your latest credit score for free on WalletHub. Hope this helps!
Just how much your score is lowered depends on several personal factors, like how late you paid and how often you tend to miss payments. Obviously, if you are a regular offender, your score will suffer more.
I had credit of 704+. About 5 months ago, (after struggling financially but paying the minimum due every month), I came into a small bit of money. Thinking of the interest that would be saved, I paid off two loans equaling about $7,000 – the balance of my only car, and the remainder of a personal loan I had taken out about 5 years ago. Now, the only thing left on my credit are 4 credit cards which, at the time, were nearly at their limits. Instead of paying them off, I decided to pay much more on them every month to bring them way down in balance. I have been paying about 3 times the minimum on the cards each month without using them.
Wow, when i bought my house back in 99, over 600 was a decent credit score…. Sitting at 700 only because of my wife’s due diligence I thought that I was KING of the credit score… After paying my house off 19 years early JP Morgan-Chase thought it would be funny to place a foreclosure and bankruptcy upon my credit report. I am NOT kidding. The worst thing I ever did regarding my home loan was to be maybe a week late with a payment. I only noticed this egregious error after agreeing to co-sign a loan for my brother-in-law. I am still thinking of suing. A year later after many phone calls and one where I asked for a manager telling her she was being recorded and That I was being filmed for a Michael Moore movie did i finally get results. So where was I? Well it’s 2014 the kids are getting older and my wife wants a new kitchen and siding on the house. Me? I’d rather live in the woods in a trailer. Anyway, she is my queen and i am her fool so she gets what she wants. Securing 30k while living in a house wort 200k should be no problem, or so I thought. With under 7k in debt besides my wife’s auto loan I figured that I would be the shot caller on this loan. Yes, the banks wanted to give but they wanted to give way more than the 30k i was seeking. They also wanted 15 year agreements… Things went south quick and i headed to the SAFE HAVEN of a CREDIT UNION. Nope! I’ve been done with banks for years and NOW—– I plan on keeping it that way. At the credit union I was a PERSON. I actually knew the loan officer and a few board members. Not that this insured my loan but it gave me great confidence that my voice would be heard even with the mathematical formulas that decide your credit score and ones ability to re-pay loans. We all know what happens when banks lend in a predatory manner… Think 2008…. The credit union is not in the business of loosing money nor is it in the business of making your life a living hell like Jp Morgan did for me.
There is no minimum credit score needed to apply for most loans or credit cards. However, you are less likely to qualify for a loan or credit card and less likely to receive favorable rates when your credit score is low. If you are trying to qualify for a conventional loan or credit card with a low credit score, you may wish to wait until your credit improves, so you can ensure you get the best rates possible.
Although all the four credit information companies have developed their individual credit scores, the most popular is CIBIL credit score. The CIBIL credit score is a three-digit number that represents a summary of individuals’ credit history and credit rating. This score ranges from 300 to 900, with 900 being the best score. Individuals with no credit history will have a score of -1. If the credit history is less than six months, the score will be 0. CIBIL credit score takes time to build up and usually it takes between 18 and 36 months or more of credit usage to obtain a satisfactory credit score.
You know why auto payments will make your score go down? It’s the minimum payment. They want to see you pay in full or make large payments. They have everything covered I’ve been trying to figure this whole thing out & they want a mix of credit, cc’s, & some other type of loan. Not to mention, you really shouldn’t move too much. Even if you own your home. Anything over 5 years will get you a higher score. My hubby (FLBiker) & I built our last home 3 yrs ago & wanted to do a little more to it. Wanted to charge about 10k and not touch our savings. So I actually had to get some new cc’s so our utilization was over 20%! But I knew that our score would plummet if it went past 20%. Now he rotates the cards to buy lunch so they all get used a bit. Seems like we’re jumping through hoops?lol
Credit scores are often used in determining prices for auto and homeowner’s insurance. Starting in the 1990s, the national credit reporting agencies that generate credit scores have also been generating more specialized insurance scores, which insurance companies then use to rate the insurance risk of potential customers. Studies indicate that the majority of those who are insured pay less in insurance through the use of scores. These studies point out that people with higher scores have fewer claims.
You have a FICO Credit Score for each of the three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. Each of these scores is based on different information that each of the bureaus has for you, and as mentioned above, this available information may very well differ from bureau to bureau.
Secured Loan -You borrow from your own savings. I agree, after a bankruptcy that couldn’t be avoided, by working hard at paying debts on time- my credit score has spiked near 800 in just 3 yrs. Use them and pay them off.
Credit Management Company (CMC) is a nationally licensed and SOC 2 compliant agency made up of skilled and experienced teams. We consistently create and execute customized receivables management solutions for healthcare, government, higher education, financial services, and commercial sectors.
Each individual actually has over 60 credit scores for the FICO scoring model because each of three national credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, has its own database. Data about an individual consumer can vary from bureau to bureau. FICO scores have different names at each of the different credit reporting agencies: Equifax (BEACON), TransUnion (FICO Risk Score, Classic) and Experian (Experian/FICO Risk Model). There are four active generations of FICO scores: 1998 (FICO 98), 2004 (FICO 04), 2008 (FICO 8), and 2014 (FICO 9). Consumers can buy their classic FICO Score 8 for Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian from the FICO website (myFICO), and they will get some free FICO scores in that moment ( FICO Mortgage Score 2 (2004), FICO Auto Score 8, FICO Auto Score 2 (2004), FICO Bankcard Score 8, FICO Bankcard 2 (2004), classic FICO score 9, FICO Auto Score 9, and FICO Bankcard Score 9). Consumers also can buy their classic FICO score for Equifax (version of 2004; named Score Power) in the website of this credit bureau, and their classic FICO Score 8 for Experian in its website. Other types of FICO scores cannot be obtained by individuals, only by lenders. Some credit cards offer a free FICO score several times per year to their cardholders.
To become eligible for the very best credit cards, loans, and mortgages, you’ll need a credit score of 740 or above. That’s right at the top of the “good” category, just ten points shy of “excellent.” So how can you do it? Here are a few simple tips.
Very old system, low pay no raises offered, hard to hit goals, & no advancement within the company. Managers blame you for why people are not paying their medical debt. Even after averaging 150-200 calls a day, VERY repetitive. And when raffling prizes it is ridge in the CEO favor of his favorites. Managers are very patient if you have a problem and/or a concern with a accounts. Also benefits are pricey, and bonuses aren’t nice when you finally hit goals. I’d strongly suggest working elsewhere !
Your credit report, however, does not include your credit score. You must pay to get that, generally $8 to $10. Instructions are included when you get your free report. If you’re checking your report and score for the first time in a long time, go with Equifax.
It sounds like you are taking the right steps. As the information gets older is does have less impact. Have you obtained your free credit score from Credit.com? If so I’ll be happy to try to help you understand it.
Yes, I know. I started with them but now have prime cards with good rewards. I did want to say that my score has never gone over 750 with just the mtg, car payment & cap one card. I have good cash in the bank. But only use my cards for what I would normally pay for with my debit cards. Now I get rewards with these cards. I did do well for Xmas. Still collecting rewards!!! I hope the new cards & car payment will get my score over 800 & as close to 850 as possible. Thank you for all of your help.
0% for first 6 months, then 13.49% – 24.49% Variable 5% cash back on purchases within select categories up to the quarterly maximum (signup required); unlimited 1% on all other purchases $0 Excellent, Good, Average
When my ex left, she just left. She didn’t care about the credit cards, hardly asked about her daughter, and I had to change bank accounts just to stop her from taking money from me. I had no choice but to take all the debt on for both of us, as she wasn’t working on any of it (as far as I could tell).
Opening a new account lowers your time with a card, thus affecting your score negatively. The longer you have a card the better. Example if you have 1 card for 8 years Your average is 8 years. Open another new card and now your average time with 2 cards is 4 years. The longer you have a card the better.
Talk with a consumer law attorney. You may have a case for credit damage and their actions may violate debt collection laws too. California in particular has a strong state law – the Rosenthal Act – in addition to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act.
I disagree strongly. The FICO system isn’t biased. It is a good indicator of ones ability to pay back debt. It’s also possible to have a very poor credit rating and within 7 years have an excellent rating. As already mentioned paying your monthly payment on time and staying under 20% of open credit line will benefit huge. It’s takes several years to get an excellent credit score and about 90 days to have a poor score. People that have paid their debts on time and show a long history of this should get the best rates. They earned it. It wasn’t just given to them. While it is true that those with hits on their credit will pay a much higher interest rate they will also be required to put down a substantial down payment and have co-signer(s) willing to put up collateral. Their past history will typically follow suit. Lenders want people to pay their loans. They aren’t in the business to foreclose or recover assets from non paying borrowers. If the general public would smarten up and stop living paycheck to paycheck burdened with debt and get ahead of it then they would never have to worry about if they are approved. If they stopped missing payments and filing for bankruptcy protection the interest rates would drop down for everyone and borrowing would be much easier. It’s already been proven that having a lot of high risk loans has a huge detrimental impact when they aren’t paid back. Housing bubble = huge lending mistake. People were approved for mortgages that shouldn’t have been period. This caused a surge in real estate price then pop. Here we are now. All they did is just set back all the debtors who borrowed during that time and didn’t default on their loans. Instead they are upside down in their mortgage. What are they getting from the government? Not a thing. Instead their property value will barely cover the inflation rate for years to come.
Don’t worry if you live in a state with lower credit averages, or if you’re in a high credit state but still have a low score. You can boost your own score by taking a number of basic, strategic steps.
For consumers who still need help getting that number up closer to the national average, a respected credit repair company can be a good resource in getting outdated and incorrect items removed from your credit report.

If the applicant is declined for credit, the lender is not obliged to reveal the exact reason why. However industry associations including the Finance and Leasing Association oblige their members to provide a satisfactory reason. Credit-bureau data sharing agreements also require that an applicant declined based on credit-bureau data is told that this is the reason and the address of the credit bureau must be provided.
Going forward, if you tend to carry high balances on your credit card accounts, then you may actually find that it will cost you more per month to carry these higher balances because the minimum amount due may be raised to accommodate for this trend.
The three main credit bureaus are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Each bureau gives you a score, and these three scores combine to create both your 798 FICO Credit Score and your VantageScore. Your score will differ slightly among each bureau for a variety of reasons, including their specific scoring models and how often they access your financial data. Keeping track of all five of these scores on a regular basis is the best way to ensure that your credit score is an accurate reflection of your financial situation.
Why are credit scores so different between each credit reporting agency? Mine are about 70 points different. I have a year of on time payments, but score is still in the 600 area, no credit previously.
