I thought u sounded fine and my credit sucks. It’s true that everyone handles money differently. I’m jealous that you are able to pay so efficiently and timely. I actually picked up a few pointers. Thanks for the info.
Even if your score is in the low 500s, you may still be able to get credit, but it will come with very high interest rates or with specific conditions, such as depositing money to get a secured credit card. You may have to pay more for car insurance or put down deposits on utilities.
So, to build a good credit score, you’ll need make all of your loan payments on time, keep the amount of debt you owe below at least 30% and ideally 10% of your total credit limit(s), maintain credit accounts for the long haul, add a mix of accounts (installment loans versus revolving loans, for instance) over time and manage how often you apply for new credit in a short timeframe.
Americans are entitled to one free credit report in every 12-month period from each of the three credit bureaus, but are not entitled to receive a free credit score. The three credit bureaus run Annualcreditreport.com, where users can get their free credit reports. Credit scores are available as an add-on feature of the report for a fee. If the consumer disputes an item on a credit report obtained using the free system, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the credit bureaus have 45 days to investigate, rather than 30 days for reports obtained otherwise.[26]

Don’t Get Discouraged: Even if you never reach 850, “merely” having excellent credit is an amazing achievement. It will save you boatloads of money over the course of your life. And it won’t ever stand in your way like a “bad” score. Plus, you may find consolation in the fact that having excellent credit means your score is higher than over 60% of people, according to WalletHub data.
Maximize Your Available Credit: Credit cards are the best credit-building tool available because most people can get approved for one. They all report information to the major credit bureaus on a monthly basis, and they don’t have to cost you a thing. As long as you pay your bills on time and avoid spending more than you can afford, your credit reports will fill with positive information, and your credit score will improve. And you can help things along by keeping your credit utilization below 30% – or even below 10% if you’re really aiming for perfection. You should also consider becoming an authorized user on a family member’s credit card account. Assuming your relative has good credit or better, his or her standing will effectively rub off on you and accelerate your credit-score gains.
If you find that you have a pretty lengthy history of late and missed payments, then your scores on each scoring model will be negatively impacted by your inability to make payments. When determining your score, each scoring model will take a closer look at how recently you have missed a payment or were late, how many accounts were late, and how many total payments on each account were missing or late.
It is always good to have a high credit score; however, it may take years to achieve a perfect score. We are talking about a lot of effort here. Of course, you can save money with an excellent FICO credit score. A good example would be a mortgage loan — with an excellent credit score, you can get low interest rates, thus you can save money on the interest that you pay back.
If you notice that your credit score is well below the American average of 695, or you’re constantly facing roadblocks to your financial goals because of your credit, it might be time to get help from a professional.
Hard Inquiries: Hard inquiries occur when you apply for new credit. They remain on your credit report for two years, though they impact your credit score less and less as time passes. Checking your own credit will not impact your credit score.

My credit score is 548. I have some late charges on my credit and would like to have them removed. First, what do you recommend how to remove charges and second, how to get my credit score back on track.
Honestly i think people who give themselves too much credit should stop and think before gloating or even giving advice. Most of us out there know how to manage money but not everyone has the same advantages as the person next to you. Imagine being poor bringing home $800.00 a month because you have no education and you can’t afford to not work while putting yourself through school. $800.00 doesn’t pay the average rent, utilities, a vehicle to get to work and all the other extra expenses the government chooses to throw on individuals. I understand some of the people on here claim it is helpful advice but poor people are not less intelligent than the rich. Most of us already know how to save but not every situation makes it possible. Should poor people not want to try to have what others do when most of the people with money laugh at them calling them names and ridiculing them? Let us be honest in the world we live in. I know a few people who wished they did not grow up in the families they did because there wasn’t any support at all. Then rich people say well thats why we have support programs, grants and student loan programs to aide them, well this is where the rich need some lessons because 1. Grants require certain guidelines to get approved which usually mostly fathers and mothers only get but a single individual usually gets turned down. 2. Student Loans also have requirements and if the person chose the wrong career path then they might as well not have gone in the first place since their debt to income ratio almost equals the poor. 3. Its awesome that some programs can assist people but for someone extremely dirt poor there are just not enough programs to help them. Let us also mention the fact that we tend to frown anytime someone supposedly “freeloads” which sets the mood to deter people from using the assistance. So this $800.00 income leaves this individual not only starving but eventually homeless. Good for you rich people on here that act as if it is the poor person’s fault to why they couldn’t save.
Credit scoring is closely regulated in the UK, with the industry regulator being the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Consumers can also send complaints to the Financial Ombudsman Service if they experience problems with any Credit Reference Agency.[20]
i had a FICO credit score of well over 700 in Nov 2014. I received an offer from Chase bank for 0% for 16 months. So i decided to consolidate all my c/cards to this one card. A total of about $7k. When I consolidated everything to one account my credit score dropped 150 points! REALLY? So instead of $7k spread out over 6 cards and moved to one my credit score dropped. That’s BS! Then in Dec 2014 I made a $4k payment. And my score jumped a whopping 25 pts. So bogus!
Some have blamed lenders for inappropriately approving loans for subprime applicants, despite signs that people with poor scores were at high risk for not repaying the loan. By not considering whether the person could afford the payments if they were to increase in the future, many of these loans may have put the borrowers at risk of default.[26]

Well then you clearly have a high salary and don’t have to worry. And, by the way, you missed my whole point. People sometimes find themselves in financial predicaments through no fault of their own – job loss, illness, divorce, etc. – that can make life less than perfect and certainly not as neat and tidy as you seem to think it will always be. Life has a way of tossing serious curveballs at people. And if you live in a place like the Bay Area, that can knock you off course pretty harshly and very fast even if you think you’re ‘prepared.’
Think of your credit scores like a report card that you might review at the end of a school term, but instead of letter grades, your activity ends up within a scoring range. However, unlike academic grades, credit scores aren’t stored as part of your credit history. Rather, your score is generated each time a lender requests it, according to the credit scoring model of their choice.
If you are repairing damaged credit, however, it can take much longer to up your score. A person who only qualifies for a secured card, for example, can generally improve to fair credit within 12 to 18 months – with responsible card usage, of course.
Even if you have no plans to borrow right now, good credit can come in handy in case of a medical emergency or in the event you want to buy a house or car and need to finance it. But if credit cards make you uncomfortable, you don’t need them for good credit. Good luck to you.
