Pippy – It’s very hard to tell. Have you ordered copies of your credit reports? It’s possible there is a mistake on them. Or their could be a collection account you aren’t aware of (such as a medical bill that went to collections). Here’s how to get your free annual credit reports. That’s where I suggest you start.
When shopping for an auto loan or mortgage, it’s normal for consumers to shop around to find the best rates. Depending on the scoring model being used, there is a 14-45 day span for these types of inquiries that groups them into only one inquiry. The idea behind this is to give consumers time to shop around, without taking a drastic hit to their scores. FICO score models allow 30 days, while others allow 45 days. One the other hand, the VantageScore model uses only a fourteen-day span. You can always ask a lender which credit scoring model they’re using when applying for a loan.
For example, if you have no credit history, it will take a minimum of six months to establish a credit score. Credit score formulas require an active credit account to be present for at least six months before a score is generated.

When disputing any errors on your credit report, always remember to give specific details regarding why you feel the information on your credit report is incorrect and include any evidence you may have that helps to prove the mistake. Always make copies of all the information you send it with your dispute as well, so you have it for your own records.
NOOOOOO! Do not close them. That will also kill your credit score. As long as you aren’t being charged a hefty annual fee, there’s no reason to close your cards. The longer the life of the credit line, the better for your credit. And certainly do not close any cards while you have a balance on it.
You forgot one simple thing in your practice. each new credit account splits your credit age average. So taking on that many accounts at once is what hurts your score. But good news is more account less of a split and the faster year lenght of credit goes up. Most people don’t realize there is several factors to a heathy credit report. Also having to many types of the same line of credits will hurt you in the lenders eyes. Good example 1 visa,1 master card, 2 store cards, 1 personal loan. 1 morgage. If all your credits are loans it shows you got less borrowing potential, if all is revolving credit it shows you can max every thing out to fast. just few things to consider for a healthy porfolio
Pavelka said he always managed his money well as a bachelor but did occasionally carry a credit card balance. When he got married in 1987, “my wife kind of kicked me in line,” he said. Today, he said his wife still has veto power over his “fun” purchases. He defied her once – when he bought his Harley in 2005. (“To her credit, her concern was more my safety than expense,” he said. “So although I already had my motorcycle endorsement for 20 years, I took Harley’s Rider’s Edge training course.”)
You might think you have to have no debt to have a really high credit score, but that’s not true. Credit scores are formed in part based on your payment history. If you never have debt, you have no track record for repaying it.
The South has the worst credit, on average (657), whereas the Midwest has the best (680). In fact, four of the five states with the highest average credit scores are in the Midwest. With that being said, every region has at least one state whose residents boast good credit, on average.
Why does my FICO scre continue to change? It fluctuates fron 832 to 826. I do nothing different…..pay my cards of constantly and some have negative balances (meaning I overpaid and the CC owes me money).
It is interesting to me how some place blame or accuse others of gloating. Really it is what it is. We try and ssucceed or possibly fail. It doesnt always go well and thats just the way it is. There are outside forces beyond anyones control that can divert a perfect path to an imperfect path. Take it with a grain of salt, keep a good attitude and fight the good fight. No one gets through life with no troubles. Accept it without placing blame, thats life.Blessings.
According to the Austrian Data Protection Act, consumers must opt-in for the use of their private data for any purpose. Consumers can also withhold permission to use the data later, making illegal any further distribution or use of the collected data. Consumers also have the right to receive a free copy of all data held by credit bureaus once a year. Wrong or unlawfully collected data must be deleted or corrected.
Actually, we did this for our daughters and son and it has raised their credit scores by 143 points! We also co-signed for a used car for our son, who in a year, traded it in and bought a new one on his own!
Most credit scores – including the FICO score and VantageScore 3.0 – operate within the range of 300 to 850, and a score of 700 or above is generally considered to be good. Within that range, there are different categories, from bad to excellent. They generally look like this:
Consumers have the right to receive a free copy of all data held by credit bureaus once a year. At present Schufa, the main provider of credit file data, provides scores for about three-quarters of the German population.
Here is a thought, aim for no credit score. Your FICO score is no indication of how successful you are financially. It is purely based on your use of debt. In other words, it’s really a score of how much you like to play kissy face with debtors. Instead, get and stay debt free and save up to buy something. And yes, people take cash when you are looking to buy a home. Keep this in mind, most wealthy people do not have any debt. Thanks Dave Ramsey for helping us have financial peace.
YES> The bank doesn’t care and it builds credit without having to pay. Anyone can fix their credit score for free! All you need is a little self education. People say “YOU” need a credit card for emergencies… BS! Good credit and a good credit union will beat a credit card any day of the week!!!
Sounds like a good idea but doesn’t work so well. My score is 742 because of lack of credit! I had the income, etc. but thought paying for everything was the smartest thing I could do. Boy was I wrong. I had amex and a couple of cap one cards. Amex is 36 yrs old. Well, I seen how all of the big credit companies wanted people with many credit cards, diverse credit, and high CL’s. So I went out and got a several good cc’s with high limits. Charged them carefully for Christmas and will pay them off in January. The 36 yr history combined with the new cc’s brought my overall cc history down to just under 4 yrs! But I now have a great mix of credit (all but a student loan), many cc’s with high limits (using responsibly), and feel like all I need to to is rotate my cards and pay in full and hope to see a score as close to 850 as I can get. I will try try to always keep a mtg payment, car payment, etc. It seems they want to see us in debt & managing it well. And yes, it appears income does play a role in this as well. But I have seen some students with 18K incomes and very high CL’s & ficos.
Here are some financial tips to get there: 1) Merely paying your bills on time is no longer enough. Don’t get me wrong about this fundamental habit; the consequence of not paying what you owe on time is the ding on your credit history every time. Since we’re talking about shooting for the highest score, you’ve got to do more than pay on time. Instead of paying one time per month, why not do two payments per month or on a bi-weekly basis? Show the credit card companies how prudent you are. 2) Spend no more than 10% of the credit limit, consistently. If your credit limit is $1,000, then the magic number for you not to cross is $100. Think creatively in advance what you can do with a $100 budget. Could it be your gas bill, eating out, books, etc? Use your imaginations, and best of luck!
5. Only apply for credit when necessary. It’s important to have a healthy mix of lines of credit, including credit cards, auto loans, mortgages and even personal loans, Steele says. This shows that lenders are willing to trust you with their loans. And the more available credit you have, the lower your credit utilization ratio will be, he says.
We just love to be judged. Who decided the rules? The banks? The credit card companies? Screw all of them and pay with cash. Get in line sheep and baaah for your “credit scores”. After all, we are all just a number.

The biggest factor in play when it comes to an average credit score and income is the credit utilization. Credit utilization should always remain at under thirty percent to maintain a good average credit score.

Certainly working on your credit won’t hurt. (A bigger down payment can also mean you will pay less in interest.) Consider talking with a bank or credit union beforehand to get approved for a loan. (Any time you apply, your credit can take a small, temporary hit. So rather than have every dealership run your credit, it can be smart to walk in with a loan already approved.) And well before you plan to buy, check your free annual credit reports to be sure they are error-free. If you see something that needs to be corrected, you’ll have time to dispute it before your lending application is evaluated. Here’s how: A Step-By-Step Guide to Disputing Credit Report Mistakes. Good luck to you — and you’re smart to be considering these questions well ahead of time.
Everyone’s situation is different but we make mid 5 figure, zero debt and FICO of 837. We live within our means and pay credit cards off every month. House is paid off (early) both trucks over 10 yrs old.
Now suppose you want to buy that same car, same loan term, but your credit score is right on track with the national average of 695. Because you have those extra 80 points, your interest rate is 4.547 percent, and over the next four years you pay $1,912 in interest.
People want to blame others for not understanding how the stock market works, but the truth is not many people have enough knowledge to safe-guard their money on the stock markets. I have seen well-educated people make mistakes that is common even among those with little to no knowledge of stocks. If you can afford it, get life insurance and put money away that is invested in a regular savings account or your mattress (fire proof) or just put it in the bank safe in incraments of $100 bills.
Your payment history is the key factor that helps to determine your credit score. In the simplest terms, your payment history is based on how often you pay at least the minimum payment on your bills on time. However, some of the other factors aren’t so simple. The second most important factor is the amount you owe, which is based on the amount of credit you have available compared to the amount of debt you have. This is called your credit utilization ration, and it matters because lenders believe you are more likely to miss payments if your credit cards are maxed out.
Here is my problem. Our credit history only dates back 1 year 10 months…We got 2 bad credit, credit cards when we started out. They have low lines of credit at $600 and $700. They charge us $75 a year for them. We now have good credit and way better cards and would like to drop the first two. They are only about 3 months older than our better cards. They hold us hostage with those fees because we are afraid to close them and drop our credit. We had a Kohls card for 3 months and decided to close it because we just didn’t use it and it dropped our credit by 15 points! How much will it drop if we close these 2 cards then?
If you are looking for simple ways to effectively improve a bad credit score, you should focus on paying your bills on time as agreed upon, maintain positive payment history with your lenders, pay down all your debt to help improve the credit utilization ratio, and only apply for a credit account when you really need it. Try to keep the hard inquiries on your credit files to a minimum. Too many can have a negative impact on your credit scores.

The first step to interpreting a score is to identify the source of the credit score and its use. There are numerous scores based on various scoring models sold to lenders and other users. The most common was created by FICO and is called FICO score. FICO is a publicly traded corporation (under the ticker symbol FICO) that created the best-known and most widely used credit score model in the United States. FICO produces scoring models which are installed at and distributed by the three largest national credit repositories in the U.S (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian) and the two national credit repositories in Canada (TransUnion Canada and Equifax Canada). FICO controls the vast majority of the credit score market in the United States and Canada although there are several other competing players that collectively share a very small percentage of the market.
Gerri Detweiler – high credit scores are so highly sought after that the alternate route of building wealth is nearly inconceivable. I am curious to see if there is an answer to my question…if i maintain payments on my credit card at 10% utilization, how long will it take me to acquire a million dollar net worth??
I raised my score 200 points in 3 years with alot of hard work…got a personal loan and now have 3 credit cards instead of 11….pay before the due date..dont use over 30% of your credit line…pay balance every month..if you dont need it dont buy it!!!! Maintain your residance…dont keep moving every couple years…lendars look at that though they wont tell you it effects your outcome!! By the way…my score was 560 41 months ago !!!
The average credit score in America falls just shy of the “Good” credit cutoff. According to FICO, the average score as of April 2015 is 695. This represents a high point for the past 10 years, and the scores have been climbing for the past two years.
Remember that even though your credit reports are free every twelve months, your credit score is not included. It’s a separate calculation that is requested when your credit is pulled by third parties such as lenders and creditors. There are several monitoring services if you’d like to check out your score on a regular basis, or you can pay a one-time fee to FICO to access your score.
They take a higher risk because they charge such outrageous interest that they are setting up the lendee to fail. They increase their own risk. It is not fair nor smart business. It is an easy way to gouge people and then foreclose and recoup a large percentage of the loan and write the rest off and recoup the rest in tax write offs. Win win for the lender either way. Has nothing to do with risk and everything to do with gouging those who can least afford it.
Many people out there have struggled through this “depression” and their credit scores have gone down. Yet they have managed to survive and pay their bills. They have paid late, because of loss of jobs etc. Its been reported that 75% of the country have a 620 score or below. An now they are being tagged as poor credit. They are the ones who struggled to stay out of foreclosure, or bankruptcy. You are the middle class who are the victims. Start calling your congressman and woman to change the Dodd Frank banking laws.
